Underground Farmer’s Markets

Posted January 27, 2010 by susie No Comments

heart chocolateJust heard about San Francisco’s Underground Farmer’s Market, organized by ForageSF, with all sort of interesting foods from “a mix of mostly unlicensed food and body products makers.” According to the San Francisco Weekly, it’s now a private event (speakeasy style?) after a visit from the Health Dept. Such an event is a great way for people thinking of starting a food business to get some more taster input! (Who me?)

Date: Thurs., Jan. 28, 5-11 p.m.
Location: 199 Capp (at 17th St.)

Free!

The countdown to Valentine’s Day begins! And while we can come up with a reason anytime of the year to treat ourselves to a box of reaallly good chocolate, we know for some people with more restraint, this is their time of year to indulge! Of course we all know Valentine’s Day is the time of year for us to show our other half how much we adore them, but what about showing your love for other things in your life? We love all the amazing artisan food makers we are able to discover by working here at Foodzie. So this Valentine’s Day we want to show them some looooove.

Show Your Love

Join us in celebrating the small artisan food producers across the country! Now through February 5th we want to hear about your favorite artisan food producer (on Foodzie or not, either is good by us!). To enter, show us what producer you love by submitting via email to lovestories@foodzie.com. Choose one of three options:

a) photo of you noshing on one of their tasty products

We’ll be picking one winner with the most compelling story, who will receive a $100 Foodzie Gift Card to go on a food-lovers shopping spree this Valentine’s Day! We’ll be notifying the winner on February 8th, just in time to get your order in for the big Vday.

Oh and yes, if you didn’t notice, that funny looking character is me holding the heart and my fiance and co-founder Rob is on the right. We have a love story of our own…more mushy details on that later!

It’s Cyber Yumday! 50% OFF Every Hour

Posted November 30, 2009 by emily No Comments

Over the past few days we’ve been talking a lot about deals…if you’re sick of it, we’re sorry. If you’re loving it, you’ve got one more day to fill up the pantry or secret gift closet. You see… this isn’t a usual thing for us. Our producers don’t often discount their goods. Making iGoogle Much Tastier

Posted November 19, 2009 by emily 1 Comment

Today on Google it’s all about the tasty food and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. To kick off the next 6 week food marathon, Google partnered with The Food Network, Epicurious, various chefs, UrbanSpoon, and Foodzie! Some supplied iGoogle themes and some gadgets. If you load ‘em all up, you’ll have inspiration for recipes, ingredients, local restaurants, and yummy food gifts (that’s where we come in!).

Our contribution to this food fest, is the Foodzie gadget (see cheesecake in jar – top left!). There’s always something new on Foodzie with new producers continuously setting up stores and introducing new products to our customers. Our gadget gives you a quick peek of a few products per category (one at a time) without having to leave your google homepage. If one product doesn’t initiate hunger pains in your gut, just click “see all” to expand the gadget and bam! you’re in cheese or (insert favorite food) heaven.

This gadget is an awesome tool for the holidays that you can quickly browse through to find unique and interesting products on Foodzie. Find it here on the bottom left!

I got to celebrate the launch of our gadget with my turkey-brining hero, Alton Brown, who saved me the first year I had to prepare and serve turkey for the whole family. Today I spent the afternoon down at the Googleplex with most of the festivities led by Alton who gave the most entertaining presentation about turkey. Seriously I have never laughed out loud so much in one hour, especially not about the ol’ gobbler.

The Google folks fed us some awesome food (Google knows a thing or two about feeding people well) including this seasonal fruit tray.

Here are some of the highlights I snapped at the event, although I highly recommend tomorrow you head to YouTube (should be up by then) and check out the video of his speech packed with pinko commies, flaming turkeys, and the always witty, always animated, Alton Brown.

It’s all about the brine!

A rather more complex way (err, the Alton way!) to fry a turkey.

Same turkey. Oops, turkey on fire.

And finally….just in case you were wondering the same thing, I’ll leave you with Alton’s response to the question… “What should I make if I don’t want to make turkey for Thanksgiving?”

The Brooklyn Chocolate Experiment

Posted November 17, 2009 by Julia 5 Comments

If Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory met Top Chef, the result would be this Sunday’s Brooklyn Chocolate Experiment, a chocolate cook-off featuring signature dishes from twenty-four amateur chefs vying for top prizes.

From savory to sweet palates, the variations of chocolate infused samples ranged from Chocolate Chipotle Chili to Chocolate Souffle Cakes. The creations delighted the sold out crowd of 300 at The Bell House, a music venue in the Gowanus area of Park Slope.

I felt at home when I spotted Foodzie producer Taza Chocolate, later in the evening.

While none of the chefs from today’s show have made a creation for Foodzie yet, they might, or you could be the next chef to experiment with chocolate and join the other chocolate producers on Foodzie! Maybe this event will inspire you…

The masterminds behind the day’s festivities, Theo Peck and Nick Suarez, co-founded the experiment after competing against one another in numerous NYC cook-off’s. I caught up with them backstage where they talked about how their partnership began. “After a couple of cook-off’s, Theo contacted me and said, let’s throw our own cook-off’s, let’s make them bigger and better,” Nick Suarez said. And they certainly have, starting with this summer’s Brooklyn Beer Experiment, a beer cook-off and a home-brew off. To learn more from Theo and Nick, watch this video:

With celebrity judges, Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs of Food52.com, Ben Van Leeuwen of Van Leeuwen ice cream, Nick Fauchald of Tasting Table, Richard Muszynskia of Ricard Chocolate and Andrew Knowlton of Bon Appetit, the competition also gave the audience the chance to vote.

Before casting my ballot, I sampled my way through the spectrum of tastes beginning with savory. My friend Rachelle, who tipped me off about the Brooklyn Chocolate Experiment, had been raving about her preview taste testing of her roommate Juliana Vail’s lamb sliders with its harisa infused chocolate sauce paired with slaw and fresh baked pita. Moving down the line, it was hard to top the energy of Righteous Burn, a team of brothers and friends, as they served their pirate mole pan-fried dumplings filled with a cocoa rubbed chicken braised in chocolate beer. In sweets, brother and sister duo Rebecca and Max Lando of Working Class Foodies brought back memories of sleep-away camp with their Deconstructed S’Mores while Courtney Yadouga at a bank by day and a baker at night was joined by her mom to serve their after school special, a dark chocolate and cherry preserve cookie with a shot of warm vanilla bean infused milk.

Before the winners were announced, I talked with judge Richard Myszynski of Ricard Chocolates whose company offered one of the top prizes: a $600 1-year Chocolate of the Month membership. “The creativity behind everyone is incredible and on top of that, to do it for practically for free is amazing. They all deserve to win something,” he said. But, ultimately, only one chef could win his prize plus $150 in cash and Bottle of Chocolate Stout.

In both audience and celebrity choice, first place went to Roopa Marcello for her Thai Chocolate Ice Cream (it must have had something to do with the spring like weather in November). None of my favorites won, but I did talk to Nick and Theo’s top choice, Pervais Shallwani’s Chocolate Hush Puppies earlier in the day.

For now, I can’t wait until Theo and Nick’s next food experiment. . .until then, relive the day with this video tour of the stations. Or check out photos from the event below!
