The Effie's Homemade Story

Growing up on a farm in Nova Scotia, Effie MacLellan loved to bake oatcakes using a recipe handed down in her family for generations. Years later, her daughter Joan MacIsaac and her friend Irene Costello founded Effie’s Homemade to share the wholesome snacks with the world. On the road to launching their business, Joan and Irene had more than their fair share of Lucy and Ethel moments, but are proud to honor Effie today by baking up her old-fashioned snacks.

How Oatcakes are Made

Creating an oatcake is all about science. Similar to making a pie crust, the secret is undermixing the dough to ensure a beautiful crumb. Getting the temperature just right is key, an art Joan and Irene have continued to perfect over time. Their Cabot unsalted butter has melted in the summer and frozen rock-solid in the winter, but through practice and patience, they’ve learned to handle whatever comes. Effie’s Oatcakes are made in the traditional Nova Scotia style using rolled oats, giving the biscuits a layered, crumbly texture.
