What are Forever Chemicals?
Health Risks
According to one expert, forever chemicals are dangerous for three reasons:
What You Can Do:
Here are five kitchen-related changes you can make right now to help avoid ingesting forever chemicals:
- Choose cast iron or stainless steel cookware:
Many non-stick pans are coated with forever chemicals that can leach into food, especially when scratched or heated to high temperatures. Switching to cast iron or stainless steel alternatives can significantly reduce your exposure.
- Opt for fresh foods and avoid packaged goods:
Forever chemicals are often used in food packaging to resist grease and water. By prioritizing fresh, unpackaged fruits, vegetables, and meats, you can minimize your contact with these chemicals found in many processed and pre-packaged items.
- Filter your tap water:
Some public and private water sources can be contaminated with forever chemicals. Consider using a water filter certified to remove these substances for both drinking and cooking.
- Store food in glass or stainless steel containers:
Plastic food storage containers can leach forever chemicals into your food, particularly when heated in the microwave. Transition to glass or stainless steel containers for storing leftovers and meal prepping.
- Avoid plastic utensils and cutting boards
Just like plastic containers, plastic utensils and cutting boards can be a source of forever chemicals. Opt for wooden or bamboo cutting boards and stainless steel or bamboo utensils to reduce your exposure.
